Sant’Anna School, the only Italian institution included in the top 10, ranked 9th and retained its same position as one year ago. The THE Young Universities Rankings 2018 included 250 universities (rankings 2017 covered 200 top institutions). According to THE, several Asian universities have risen up the rankings this year, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology claimed first place, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne ranked second, and the Nanyang Technological University - Singapore placed third.

Sant’Anna School as a young university under 50 years old (established in 1987), has been assessed together with 11 Italian institutions by performance indicators grouped into teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook areas. Sant’Anna School ranked at no. 9, Università Vita e Salute San Raffaele ranked no. 23, Università di Bolzano no. 53, Università di Milano Bicocca alongside Università di Salerno ranked joint no.69, Università di Verona no. 88, Università della Calabria no. 90, Università di Roma Tor Vergata no. 92, Università di Bergamo no. 94, Università di Brescia and Università di Roma III are ranked 101-150.

The performance indicators were calibrated to reflect the profile of missions of young (innovative and forward-thinking) universities and to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

Young institutions assessed by THE Times Higher Education must meet stringent criteria (the critical overall values list academic staff, doctorates awarded, undergraduate degrees awarded, high-quality of training, international impact of research) to be included in the rankings and are required to publish more than 1000 papers in high-impact journals over the previous 5 years.
